Sticks And Stones

I was thinking about that childhood saying, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”. I am very sure this is a lie. I have had many words hurt me and cut me to the depths of my heart. Hearing them today, I can only thank my heavenly Father for changing my heart not to want to lash out in kind.

1Pe 3:9  Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

  1. You make a really good point. God spoke the Universe and all that is in it into being with His voice. Even Jesus is known as “The Word” – something that is spoken. The power of the spoken word on earth resonates through the Heavens. Some Physicists say that sound created on Earth will travel throughout the physical Universe, like ripples in a pond.

Matthew 16:19 – “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Parents routinely pronounce curses over their children. I hear people curse themselves all the time (“I am so stupid!” or “This job is killing me!”, etc.) Perhaps one of the more famous self proclaimed curse is in Mathew:

When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands and said, “I am innocent of the blood of this Just person. You see to it.” And all the people answered and said, “His blood be upon us and on our children.” (Matthew 27:24–25)

We really do have to watch what we say, because words can bless or curse. They actually could break bones, just like ‘sticks and stones”, or they can reverberate down through the generations.

  2. I loved the verse you shared Mattew 27:25…not one often called to mind and yet it is so poignant to truth for how a curse can carry on! Powerful! Thoughtful reply….
